I dont like having to negotiate to get what I see as my right. I do find it difficult to be assertive - its hard for me to say no. I have searched for guidance in the form of confidence and assertiveness classes. I used to find it difficult to be assertive but not now. Understanding compulsions There are often two elements to compulsions: Walk to postbox, post letter. In fact the underlying problem is the same - learning to tolerate Anxiety until it dies down and eventually goes away. Achievement: I have to do everything perfectly or else Im a failure. Acceptability: everyone has to be pleased with me or else Im not good enough. Trust: if I trust, I will be hurt. Control: if I ask for help Im weak or if I feel anxious Im losing control. OCD and core beliefs People with OCD often have core beliefs around perfection, responsibility and punishment that are linked together. When you are lying awake, are you troubled by anxious thoughts and/or physical symptoms of Anxiety? Almost any part of your body can be affected by Anxiety. Breakfast is important One very common problem for many Anxiety sufferers is the feeling that they cant face breakfast.

Turning my head or getting up from a sitting position made me dizzy and I would have to grab the nearest object to hang on to. Wash those hands, check that light. And while were on the subject, lets answer those two questions. PROBLEM: class lasts an hour, I dont feel fit enough for that yet. The fact that you are frightened of something that doesnt present any physical danger to you is neither here nor there to the primitive system that takes charge at that moment. Think back over your life in the two years leading up to your first experience of panic, phobia, obsession or GAD and tick any of the items that you experienced. They vary from person to person but doctors use the following list - if you experience four or more of these sensations in the space of a few seconds then you are probably having a panic attack: shortness of breath a choking sensation rapid or irregular heartbeat chest pains tension in muscles trembling or shaking numbness intense sweating dizziness nausea urgent need to go to the toilet. Assessing your life balance Use your notebook to keep a record of how you sd your time for a complete week. Just like coping skills, rewards can be anything as long as they are not: Stick to the boundary once youve set it. If you become tired, take a rest. I know that I breathe badly when Im tense, I need to work on that.I learnt how to control my breathing and Ive found this really helpful.

Changing your anxious thinking Its time to set up the next part of the recovery programme, which aims to change your anxious thinking. Look at a spider in a sealed jar. This is one of the things you may wish to discuss with them, and remind them that its not particularly helpful to keep giving this reassurance. I did some one-to-one work with a co-worker at first, then a couple of us would go out together and we would talk to take the focus away from feeling scared. The 'official' 'unofficial' description of Anxiety is a disorder in which the individual afflicted feels an intense, irrational fear and an impending sense of doom or dread.

This is the very time when someone is likely to have their first panic attack, or some other symptom of Anxiety. It is possible to come back from the black hole of Anxiety. Am I being objective? Some people find it hard to get enough sleep because their mind is racing and their body on full alert. Anxiety can strike both the confident and unconfident, but almost always it has the effect of destroying whatever self-confidence the person had. Be honest, only you will ever see the diary. Catastrophising If anything goes wrong Ill never live it down. Yes I will. You can start by cutting down on the number of times you repeat a compulsion, or by increasing the time between exposure and starting the ritual. How hard is it to face every day knowing that you might have a panic attack, or that your phobia will haunt you, or your OCD will dominate every moment? I still do it - I have a problem going beyond my comfort zone. I tried exposure when I was 17, in hospital. Panic attacks A panic attack is a sudden surge of Anxiety, usually short-lived but very intense. Typical all-or-nothing thoughts are: I must be 100% right or Im a failure. I got one thing wrong and that ruined everything. Ways of countering extreme thinking As you can see there is quite a lot of overlap between these four categories, and its likely that youll identify yourself as doing more than one type of extreme thinking. For these people its not just a question of confidence, but of self-esteem. Repeat two and three several times until you feel your chest relax. I have to see the teacher for ten minutes on Tuesday but I cant go because Ill have a panic attack. One minute, more or less happily living your life, the next, terrified and distraught, struggling to breathe perhaps, convinced you are dying, or that someone else will die and it will all be your fault. At one time I exercised too much and it made me ill, but it helps to go for a run or a walk to take my mind off anxious thoughts. If you prefer a little light thats fine. Even going on holiday or preparing for Christmas can involve a measure of anxiety. Or try the words of a song, and walk along to the rhythm of it.
